Why is doula support around the time of death so important?
Someone recently asked me why I believe death doula support around the time of death is so important.
The significance of death doula support during the dying phase in someones life lies in its holistic approach that addresses all of the dying process: emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual.
In this role, death doulas offer a source of comfort, empowerment, and a heightened sense of purpose for both the individual facing the end of life and their loved ones. As a death doula, I aid the dying individuals, whether in-person or virtually, by navigating through the natural fears and anxiety that frequently accompany thoughts of death whether it's their own or a loved one's.
The period surrounding the transition from life to death presents a unique time for forging meaningful connections with loved ones. Through my guidance, we can collaboratively shape this time as an opportunity for deepened bonds and expressions of love. By helping people to reflect on their life's journey and acknowledge significant relationships and cherished moments, death doulas take on the role of guiding individuals toward closure in these connections. You can read more about this in my blog post about The Power of Forgiveness.
Part of this effort includes designing personalized rituals or ceremonies that are in harmony with the individual's values and beliefs. These practices can be woven into the final hours and days, making the transition a time of connection and wonder.
My role as a death doula is to empower individuals by providing a safe space to express their wishes and needs, and then assist them in communicating their wishes and needs to their medical team and loved ones.
Death doulas not only support the emotional well-being of the dying person but also facilitates a more profound transition by supporting the dying person’s loved ones and caregivers through their emotional process. Through my physical presence, I offer companionship and guidance that extends its benefits to both the individual journeying towards the end of life and those who are intimately connected to them.
